smart boards!
I attended a workshop yesterday on how to create smart board activities that I can use while teaching French. I hope to start using the smart board in the library for my morning classes. I will write about how it goes. I think the grade 7s will be even more engaged.

Des sites Web
Both these websites have interactive activities where you can practice your French & the websites will tell you whether your answer is correct or not:
http://www.quia.com/shared/french/
http://www.laits.utexas.edu/tex/index.html
Using an online translator can sometimes be useful but there are a few things you should keep in mind:
- Don't put in an entire sentence or paragraph! The order of words does not translate the same from English to French. If you have a writing assignment, please use the phrases & the outline you are given in class instead.
- When entering a word, put "a" or "the" before it depending on the context (this will show you if the word is masculine or feminine & most of the time, you need the preposition in front of the word).
- Words often have more than one meaning so one way to check is to click on the French word that has just been translated & Google will give you different possibilities. The best way to know for sure if it is correct is to verify with a dictionary.
- You can listen to the translated word by clicking the speaker icon on the right hand side of the screen.

Les nombres
Since last week, all my classes have been learning the numbers in French. Each grade needs to know up to a different number each year. The requirement as written in the curriculum is as follows:
Grade 4 - the numbers 1 to 31
Grade 5 - the numbers 1 to 69
Grade 6 - the numbers 1 to 100
Grade 7 - the numbers 0 to 1000
A great way to support your child at home is to use flashcards. I am including a link to a website with printable number cards. Students will only be tested on the numbers required for their grade level.
here are links for the following numbers:
0-100
http://www.sparklebox2.co.uk/thumbs1-5/s2b5.html
0 - 1000
http://www.sparklebox2.co.uk/thumbs91-95/s2b92.html
Instructions:
For both links provided, click the red rectangle on the top right hand corner that says "DOWNLOAD NOW!"
When printing the pages for students in Grades 4 & 5, choose only the pages relevant to the grade of your child. Another option is to just make your own flash cards by writing the numbers on slips of paper.
***Students will be tested on their numbers in French this Friday.
